Jose Marti was a Cuban author, philosopher, activist and most importantly a national hero who lived from 1853 to 1895. He is called the Apostle of Cuban Independence due to his activism against the Spanish rule in Cuba. He started his political struggle right from his adolescence and repeatedly wrote about the American & Spanish threat to Latin American freedom. He fought in the Cuban Revolutionary war and subsequently died in action in the Battle of Dos Rios. He is considered one of the greatest Latin American intellectuals to this day and is a symbol of liberty in the region.
